NIIT takes GIS services global

Wednesday, February 04, 2004:

Mumbai: NIIT Technologies, the global solutions business of NIIT, has announced that it would offer Geographic Information Systems (GIS) services to its clients globally. The decision to include GIS services as part of NIIT Technologies' offerings was announced at NASSCOM 2004.

According to the press release, this strategic decision is in line with NIIT's current scheme of re-alignment of its various business lines, in view of the forthcoming spin-off of the IT services business into a separate company.

NIIT, through its subsidiary ESRI India (a strategic alliance between global leader ESRI Inc., USA and NIIT), has been offering complete solutions around GIS technology to various government departments, private sector corporations, and educational and research institutions in India since 1994.

Talking about the Indian GIS industry, Jack Dangermond, the acknowledged GIS technology 'Guru' and Founder, ESRI Inc., USA said, "Application of GIS in India has matured with ESRI software being used in  various mission critical national projects including environment, forestry, land records, and utilities."

"ESRI India is among our major distributors of GIS technology and a market leader in India. NIIT Technologies is well poised to provide services globally in this space," he added.

Announcing the extension of GIS services globally, NIIT Technologies president Arvind Thakur said, "GIS services is an under-penetrated niche segment. NIIT Technologies, with its deep understanding of GIS technology, is gearing up to emerge as the preferred choice for providing GIS services."

"A dedicated development facility for GIS services is coming up at Parwanoo in Himachal Pradesh,' he added.
