ArcExplorer is a lightweight GIS data explorer developed by ESRI.
ArcExplorer is the ultimate data exploration tool, providing powerful display and query
tools as well as data serving and retrieval capabilities via the Internet. It has been
designed to dramatically change the way geographic data can be viewed and shared
throughout organizations and the world.
Two versions of ArcExplorer are available: ArcExplorer 2 and ArcExplorer
3.1. ArcExplorer 2 is built using MapObjects, ESRI's powerful collection of GIS and
mapping components for application developers. ArcExplorer can work on its own with local
data sets or as a client to Internet data and map servers. ArcExplorer 3.1 is built with
Java, extending its utility by offering cross-platform support for both Windows and UNIX
operating systems. As a stand-alone application, ArcExplorer is a complete data explorer,
allowing users to display and query a wide variety of standard data sources.
The following capabilities are available with ArcExplorer:
Use ESRI shapefiles, ArcInfo coverages, and ArcSDE layers.
Access map services on the Geography Network.
Display a wide variety of image formats.
Pan and zoom through multiple map layers.
Fully integrate with ArcIMS.
Download vector and image data.
Perform address matching by street address or intersection.
Perform intelligent automated labeling.
Display data using classifications, symbols, and labeling.
Identify and query geographic and attribute data and much more.
Set transparency for an image or Internet Map Service.
ArcExplorer 3.1 has the added advantage of being able to work with the
Geography Network and ArcSDE, ESRI's Spatial Database Engine. Layers from ArcSDE
can be added to ArcExplorer projects. Users of ArcExplorer 3.1 can also more easily
set the transparency for an image or an Image Map Service because the transparency
settings can be accessed directly from the Layer Properties dialog general tab. This is
particularly helpful for viewing multiple Image Map Services in one map display.
Other features found in ArcExplorer include the ability to label map
features with highway shields, pan and zoom through multiple map layers, query spatial and
attribute data, create a buffer around selected features, measure distances, locate an
address, save and retrieve projects, and print maps. ArcExplorer 3.1 also offers
legends and overview maps.
In addition to being a powerful data explorer, ArcExplorer can be used as
an ArcIMS client. It allows users the unique capability to integrate local data with data
from an ArcIMS spatial server via the Internet. With ArcExplorer, data can be browsed and
queried on a corporate Intranet or the World Wide Web. Most importantly, ArcExplorer
allows data to be selected and downloaded via the Internet in industry-standard shapefile
format.
ArcExplorer 3 can be installed on a Windows NT, Windows 98, Windows 2000,
or Solaris operating system and works with ArcSDE.
