ArcGIS 8.1 introduces the complete ArcGIS Desktop, a suite of integrated
applications (ArcMap, ArcCatalog, and ArcToolbox) that can be deployed through a scalable
set of GIS client applications (ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo), which represent
increasing levels of functionality to support the diverse needs of GIS users. ArcGIS
Desktop is an integrated component of the overall ArcGIS architecture. ArcGIS is a system
of parts that can be deployed on a single desktop or distributed on a heterogeneous
computer network of workstations and servers. Users can deploy various parts of this
system to implement a GIS of any sizefrom a single user system to workgroups and
departments, for large enterprises, and for societal GIS systems.
ArcEditor, new in ArcGIS 8.1, is a
state-of-the-art GIS data visualization, query, map creation, data management, and editing
solution designed for the Windows desktop. ArcEditor includes the same basic desktop
functionality found in ArcView 8.1, but adds complete editing capabilities for ArcInfo
coverages, personal and enterprise geodatabases including the ability to create and manage
relationships, subtypes, geometric network, dimension features, and more.
ArcEditor allows you to create and edit all ESRI-supported vector data
formats including shapefiles. Additional functionality includes support for multiuser
editing, versioning, custom feature classes, feature-linked annotation, dimensioning, and
raster data in a multiuser geodatabase. This includes advanced tools for version
management, for example, version merging tools to identify and resolve conflicts.
