ESRI India News

NIIT GIS (ESRI India) to power Singapore Intelligent Map System using ESRI Technology. New Delhi, March 30, 2009                      Application to provide Authoritative map data with Integrated Geospatial information to citizens through collaboration of various Government agencies            Singapore Land Authority recently awarded the contract to develop its Intelligent Map System to NIIT GIS.                                                                                                The system is envisaged to be the next generation mapping portal for various government and private agencies including citizens of Singapore enabling them to share spatial content using internet services, accessible on desktop and mobile platforms. It will be designed to serve a common base map of Singapore for displaying location information along with intelligent search and navigation tools, thus facilitating multiple agencies to mash up spatial content and provide a variety of useful information in an integrated environment.  NIIT GIS will develop the system using industry leading ESRI ArcGIS Server technology - the first in the industry to provide mash up capability and implement it on a turnkey basis including state of the art hardware, software and helpdesk support.

NIIT GIS has a large and competent team of professionals and rich experience in developing Server GIS based Content Dissemination Portals and it plans to leverage the full potential offered by ArcGIS technology and develop a scalable and responsive GIS application for the Singapore Land Authority. It will be a first of its kind implementation in Singapore for facilitating spatial data users across the country to deploy map data and GIS processing tasks in lightweight, customized Web mapping applications, thus providing simpler ways to integrate spatial content. Speaking on the award of the project, NIIT-GIS Chief Operating Officer Dr Mukund Rao said "NIIT-GIS is proud to be associated with this unique intelligent map system of SLA. We will closely work with ESRI Singapore and will bring its ESRI India strengths to this project. NIIT-GIS is committed to the success of this project and would deliver a world-class solution by crafting and designing the best of the GIS solution for it”. Mr Kailash Agarwal, Asia Pacific Head of GIS Business, NIIT Technologies, Singapore, added that “This award is reflection of the single-minded effort and commitment of NIIT to expand our unique GIS solutions offerings within the region by working with local ESRI Distributors”.

SLA’s director of Land Asset Management Services and Land Information Centre, Mr Ng Siau Yong said: “The award of this tender to NIIT Technologies brings us one step closer to our aim of creating a common and consistent map interface for government agencies to build their own map services using an Application Programming Interface. SLA expects that NIIT Technologies will be able to come up with an exceptional solution that will bring in unique capabilities of intelligent map services for Singaporeans. The public will soon be able to tap on rich government content and mash up with their own collection of spatial information to create services and to support enterprises’ business needs, and individuals’ personal needs.”

What's coming in ArcGIS 9.3.1 (25 February,2009)

ArcGIS 9.3.1 improves the performance of dynamic map publishing and increases the sharing of geographic information.

High-Performance Dynamic Map Publishing

New faster drawing map service

  • Outperforms equivalent ArcIMS services.
  • Produces significantly better-looking maps.
  • Shortens map caching time.

New Map Service Publishing toolbar in ArcMap helps you tune-up your map documents before publishing to ArcGIS Server.

  • Review and respond to errors, unsupported content, and warnings about items that will slow down your dynamic map services.
  • Preview your map document and estimated rendering time.
  • Save your map document to a map service definition (msd) format, which is optimized for performance in ArcGIS Server.

Better Sharing of Geographic Information

Better sharing of layers

  • Layers referencing feature or raster data can be packaged into a single package file of a layer file and data
  • These layer packages can be shared with other users via files, e-mail, or the new ArcGIS Online sharing capability.
  • ArcGIS Online sharing supports
    • Data upload and registration of online services
    • Web search of layers
    • Organization, community groups, and control access to layers
    • Interactive composition of dynamic Web map mash-ups of services

Enhanced Support for Java Developers

Ability to extend the ArcGIS/ArcObjects Framework. Java developers can now create the following extensions in their native language:

  • Custom geoprocessing tools
  • Server object extensions (SOEs) and utility objects for ArcGIS Server
  • Class extensions for customized data behavior in a geodatabase
  • Custom renderers for customized rendering of data in ArcMap and ArcGIS Engine applications
  • Plug-in data sources
  • Tools for debugging, registering and deploying Java extensions for ArcGIS
  • Support for Eclipse integrated development environment (IDE)
    • Wizards to generate boilerplate code based on the developer's specification
    • Autodeploy feature
